Club legend has it that Philip Licata, an early president of the club, was only 14 years old when he met with adults to set up the mutual-aid society. The club's doctor would receive 25 cents a visit in the early years. Philip started the mutual-aid society by bringing adults together to set up the program. He actually wrote the program and then presented it to the adults who helped refine it. | |
Over a century ago, L'Unione Italiana was founded by a small visionary group who realized that by uniting together, the Italian community of Tampa could overcome many of the social and economic challenges that confronted the "turn-of-the-century" immigrants from Italy. The mission of L’Unione Italiana is to preserve and honor the culture, traditions and heritage of the Italian Community and to maintain the historical facility as a functioning memorial to the working class immigrants. |
