Read an April 4, 2004 article by Leland Hawes about the founding of the Italian Club and the mutual aid program.

Club legend has it that Philip Licata, an early president of the club, was only 14 years old when he met with adults to set up the mutual-aid society. The club's doctor would receive 25 cents a visit in the early years.  Philip started the mutual-aid society by bringing adults together to set up the program.  He actually wrote the program and then presented it to the adults who helped refine it.

Over a century ago, L'Unione Italiana was founded by a small visionary group who realized that by uniting together, the Italian community of Tampa could overcome many of the social and economic challenges that confronted the "turn-of-the-century" immigrants from Italy.

The mission of L’Unione Italiana is to preserve and honor the culture, traditions and heritage of the Italian Community and to maintain the historical facility as a functioning memorial to the working class immigrants.
